Formally launched at an event in Blairgowrie High School this ground breaking work was praised by David Bellamy, who with Fiona Armstrong, is patron of AYFD. With his famed enthusiasm for all things environmental, Bellamy expressed his belief that angling has a key role to play in the stewardship of the environment and that this new AYFD initiative sets the standard for future generations.

The qualification will be piloted at Blairgowrie High School where Deputy Head, Lynn Bryce, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme which will provided a high quality addition to the school curriculum.

The undoubted driver of this programme, Grev Humphries of Tayside police, described the programme to the assembled patrons, press, politicians, AFYD coaches and members of the public with enthusiasm for the benefits to to be gained by young people participating in AYFD programmes and it's ability to engage young people in learning.

The programme is a Level 5 award worth a healthy 26 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQA) credits, equivalent to a Credit Standard Grade and comparable with SVQ level 2 (NVQ level 2 and GCSE A-C in England).

Display at AFYD launchWritten by a number of contributors including Grev Humphries, Jim Kyle of SANA, Jane Lindsay of SEPA, Tayside police officers, academics, coaches, teachers and David Bellamy himself, the programme constitutes a comprehensive academic qualification including, in addition to angling skills; law, environmental and social issues and entomology.

Also present was David Hoey of Dreamstore Academy who do a fantastic job providing the significant funding for the essential coaching courses needed to train volunteers to the Level 2 Angling Coach standard required to lead coaching.

The scheme is expected to role out to other schools throughout Scotland over the next 12 months helping young learners enhance their academic qualifications while having the best fun of all - going fishing!
