Markle Trout Fishery Situated in the picturesque and historical surroundings of East Lothian off the A199 between East Linton and Haddington (sign posted on the A199), Markle fishery offers fishing on three lochans totalling 9.2 acres. The main loch, Markle, is an attractive water with steep crags along one shore in a very natural setting while Monastery is a more typical fishery style pond, both are fly only. The third loch, Loch Kin, is a bait / course fishery.
The two fly fishing lochs are stocked on a daily basis with rainbows and browns to over 20lbs with blues, tigers and golden trout present. There is a gravel path along one side of Markle which will allow comfortable access to persons less able yomp around the craggy shore. Loch Kin is stocked with trout as well as Carp (to 20lbs), tench, rudd and crucians. The whole package offers something to suit the novice or the experienced angler whether you are a fly or a bait angler. Rods can be hired and tuition is available making Markle a great place for a family day out and with the chance of taking a 20 pounder there will be plenty for the kids to talk about on the way home. Fishing rates are very reasonable given the good average size of the fish stocked at Markle, I have had nothing under two and a half pounds in my two visits and my best was a six and a half pound fish that fought like fury! I did notice a few anglers carrying sea trout or small salmon nets. When I was taking the photographs for this feature I chatted to the chap seated in the picture who reported he had a fish last year that was too big to fit into his sea trout net, he holds the record for the Markle with that fish which weighed in at 24lbs, his second best fish was a comparative tiddler at 16lb. (He returned the 24lb fish and it is still there, older, wiser and probably a bit bigger).
Permits cost; £20 for 8 hours, 3 fish, then catch and release. £15 for 4 hours, 2 fish, then catch and release. Sporting tickets are on offer: £12 for 8 hours catch and release only or, £9.50 for 4
hours C & R fishing. Adult and child tickets allow a quota of 4 fish shared for £23. (There are reduced rates for under 16’s and for senior citizens). Permits for Loch Lin are decided on basis of what you are after; Bait fishing for trout; Course fishing; £17 for 5 trout. £7.50 per day for a single rod. £14 for 4 trout. £11 for 3 trout. There are ladies and gents toilets, hot and cold drinks available and a tackle shop. Contact; Markle Fisheries, East Linton, East Lothian, EH40 3EB, call 01620 861213 or mobile 017947 295436.
