As happens from time to time the fishing can go off and thoughts turn to other past times especially on Sundays as there is no fishing for migratory fish in Scotland on the Sabbath. Here is a guide to the golfing opportunities available near to where you are fishing. Alness Golf Club par 67, SSS 64, 4880 yards, inland course with 18 holes. 26 miles from Inverness a bit of a gem. Fees £23 per round £25 per week days and £25 per round £30 per day weekends, junior £8 and 2 adults and two children package cost £50 per round. Lockerbie Golf Club, established in 1890 this is a parkland golf course on serious sea trout country. Par 67, 5364 yards. Rounds cost £22 week days and £26 at the weekend. Fishing nearby, Annan, Nith and Border Esk.
How they fit so many golf courses in one small island is something else but they have 6 courses on Arran. Lochranza, par 70; Corrie, par 62; Lamlash, par 64, Whiting Bay, par 63; Skiskine, par 42 and Brodrick which is a par 65, SSS 64, 4738 yards links course. Call 01770 302349 for bookings at Brodrick.
Royal Troon Golf Club, founded in 1887 Royal Troon has 3 courses on offer; The Old Course, Championship,7150 yards, par 71, SSS 74: medal par 71, SSS73: Short, 71, SSS 71, ladies, par 75, SSS 76; Portland Medal, par 71 SSS71, 6289 yards, and a par three 9 hole course, 1191 yards. Troon Lochgreen, one of three municipal courses offering challenging golf (Jack Nicklaus hit an 82 here on an Open qualifier). Par 73, 6785 yards, round cost a very reasonable £25 week days and £30 at the weekend. For bookings call 01292 312464.
Brora Golf Club, par 69, SSS 70, 6110 yards 18 hole links golf course established in 1891. Located on the mouth of the river Brora the course was redesigned by 5 times Open Champion James Baird in 1923. Huntly Golf Club established in 1892, 5399 yards, SSS 66. Located on the edge of Huntly between the rivers Deveron and Bogie just where they join below the Castle Water. £16 per round week days and £20 at weekends. Contact E Scott on 01466 792360. Alford Golf Club; 18 holes, 5483 yards par 69 SSS 66. Located in mature park land looking towards Bennachie this well groomed golf course offers challenging golf. Insch Golf Club; 4839 yards, SSS 66. This recently built golf course has settled into the its mellow rural setting in parkland with some very nice water features. Contact E. Kemnay Golf Club; 6362 yards, par 71 SSS 71. Parkland course set in a scenic rural location. Rounds £26 per day £30 at the weekend. Contact Y Moir on 01467 643746. Beats nearby, Kemnay AC water, Manar, Monymusk. Not far from the Dee.
Royal Aberdeen Golf Club. A classic links course next to the mouth of the river Don the Royal Aberdeen is the sixth oldest golf club in the world, established in 1780. There are two courses available, the championship Balgownie course, 6372 yard SSS 71 and Silverburn, 4066 yards SSS 60. Fees are £100 per round week days and £150 pounds per round at weekends for Balgownie and £50 and £75 for Silverburn. Contact GF Webster 01224 702571. Fishing nearby the Don, Dee and Ythan.
Durness Golf Club, par 70, sss 67, 5555 yards. The most northerly golf course in mainland Britain is a 9 hole links course with 18 tees on the shores of Loch Lanlish. Fees £15 per day £50 per week. Contact Lucy Mackay on 01971 511364. Fishing nearby, Durness Lochs, Kyle of Durness.
The river Eden is in Fife, for golf fans that means Mecca, with one of the most famous courses at St Andrews named after it. This will be the only entry on Spinfish that goes 'when you are not playing golf there is some really good fishing about'.
St Andrews, 700 acres of golf course, 6 golf courses; the Old Course, The New, The Jubilee, The Eden, The Strathtyrum, The Balgave and that is just the St Andrew Links Trust courses (and a new course is under construction). The Old Course plays at 7125 yards long championship distance and 6566 medal. Booking can be made on line at http://www.standrews.org.uk/golf/book_golf/green_fees.html and full information is available at www.standrews.org.uk (was going to set out the details here but this is a fishing site and 700 acres of golf course takes a lot of describing). You can book the Eden, Strathtyrum, Jubilee and New on line with guaranteed tee off times but for the Old Course you have to enter the daily ballot, demand as you might guess is very high - booking early is essential.

Blairgowrie Golf Club, 2 woodland heath courses and a 9 hole course. Rosemount, par 72, SSS 72, 6588 yards, rounds £50 week days and £55 at the weekend; Landsdowne, par 72, SSS 73, 6895 yards, rounds £40 week days and £45 at the weekend; Wee Course, 9 holes, par 64, SSS 63, 4654 yards for 18 holes. Girvan Golf Club, like Turberry this course shares the famous views of Ailsa Craig without costing a packet for a round. Par 64, SSS 64, 5064 this windy links course offers many challenges. Rounds cost £14 week days and £17.50 at the weekend, call 01465 714346. Fishing on the rivers Girvan, Doon and Ayr; lochs, Fairlie Moor, Maich Fishery and Collenan Reservoir and Loch Doon.
Helmsdale Golf Course, par 60, SSS 60, 3720 yards. Founded in 1895 this heath land 9 hole course in a beautiful setting over looks the river. Rounds cost £15 for 18 holes. Call 01431 821063. Rivers Helmsdale and Brora.
Blairgowrie Golf Club has three courses all open to visitors with some restrictions, best to call in advance for bookings and information. The club is old, established in 1889 so watch out for strict dress codes, no jeans and keep yer shirt tucked in. The Rosemount course is the oldest. Originally a 9 hole course designed by Tom Morris it was extended and redesigned by James Braid, 18 holes, 6588 yards par 72. Landsdowne, 18 holes par 72 at 6802 yards is an all together tougher challenge. The 9 hole Wee Course completes the package of golf set in pine and birch wood. Call 01250 872622 for bookings and information. Fishing in Blairgowrie on the Ericht and the neaby Isla. Butterstone Loch is 12 miles and Loch Cluanie, 10 miles, offering good pike fishing.
Glen Isla Golf Centre in Alyth presents you with a challenging course with 40 bunkers and 5 water hazards. Par 71, SSS 71, 6402 yards. Call 01828 632445. Fishing nearby on the Isla and Ericht.
Bute Golf Club, nine hole links course, par 68, 5164 yards for 18 holes. Rounds are £10, all 01700 502158. Fishing for trout and pike on Loch Fad and brown trout on loch Quein.

Royal Dornoch Championship Golf Club, par 70, SSS 73, 6514 yards. 18 hole links course established in 1877 (although golf has been played here since 1616) described by Tom Watson as 'the best fun I've ever had on a golf course'. Round cost £52 -78 weekdays and £55 - 88 at the weekend. Call 01862 810219. The Kyle off course plus the Shin, Cassley, Oykel, Carron and Loch Shin.
