 COYLE WATER

Week Ending 18th January 2009

Fishing has been good over the past week despite the poor conditions. Floating lines have been the order of the week fished with gold headed PTN, Creeps and a variety of Buzzers; the best have been those with orange or red cheeks. Mr D Rogers using a PTN released 5 during a short session, C. Auld took 2 nice fish for 6lbs, Mick released 9 fish and D. Rodgers released 5 using a PTN. Davy Dick took a cracker of 4lbs 4oz, pals McCormack & Murphy released 9 between them, Messrs. Grant senior & junior had 4 between them for 7lbs 8oz and released 1, Mr. Murray took 2 for 4lbs 8oz, Bob Stewart took 1 and released 4 on a Humungus.

Many other anglers have had excellent sport. With all the ice away from the Bait Pond anglers have been returning to some great sport. Mr. & Mrs. Miller on 3 fish tickets took 3 apiece for a total weight of 13lbs 8oz, Mr. Davies from Patna took 2 for 4lbs 12oz, Peachy also had 2 for 4lbs and regular visitor Mr. McAdam took his 3 fish for 6lbs. Power Bait and Maggots have both worked very well fished preferably using bubble floats.

Week Ending 11th January 2009

What a week it has been with a mixture of ice, rain and high winds but for the anglers who braved the elements good sport was to be had. By the end of the week the fish was excellent. Mick took 3 for 8lbs 8oz and released another 7, C. Murray released 5 and Hugh Munro over two 4 hour visits released into double figures as well as weighing in 2 for just short of 6lbs. Charlie Auld took 3 for 8lbs 8oz and released 6, Mr Templeton released 9 and J Allan took 1 for 2lbs 8oz and released 5. The best flies have been the Polar Cub, Black & Green Fritz, Yellow Dancers and surprisingly Snatchers. Most anglers have been leaning toward intermediate setup as favourite choice.

Sunday saw the start of the Ayrshire Fisheries Winter League with 4 teams of 8 arriving to brave gale force winds and heavy rain. The heaviest fish of the day went to Andy Kennedy from Middleton and the best bag was weighed in by John Morton who had 8 fish for 18lbs 8oz. Team Position for the first leg are:- Cowan’s Law 1st with 7 points, Coyle Water & Middleton equal 2nd with 4 points and Springwater 4th with 2 points. Considering the conditions it was by any standard an excellent days fishing with a total of 112 fish for 255 lbs.

54 fish were killed and 58 released to fight another day.

Week Ending 28th December 2008

Fishing has been generally excellent over the past week only spoiled by the nasty cold snap overnight on Saturday and despite ice breaking on Sunday the Fly Pond was partially closed. Ian Kilpatrick managed to be top rod for the Kilmarnock boys over the week.

The Fun Fly Competition on Boxing Day was won by Kevin Andrews and all participants had a great day and everyone went away with a prize and full of festive spirit. Mr McKeen and Mr McKeen had 14 fish between them taking 3 for 10lbs, GeorgeYoung had 2 during his short session and Dougie Inglis released 8.

Flies have been varied as have been tactics with fish taking flies at differing depths - during bright sunshine the fish are rising freely but not taking dries regularly just nosing at them. Best tactics are intermediates teamed up with lures and vary your retrieve and depth until you contact the fish.

The Fishery Staff wish to extend New Year Wishes with Tight Lines and Screaming Reels for 2009 to all anglers.

Week Ending 30th November2008

The fish are still being caught mainly about 2 - 3 feet down with a few being caught just under the surface.  A wide variety of flies are getting results on a floating line including the Damsel, Yellow Dancer, various Fritz patterns, Cat and Buzzers.

Dave Wilkie from Stirling had a big smile on his face today when after playing a fish on the boat for 35 minutes he landed a 12lb 4oz specimen in his 4 fish for 21lbs 4oz taken on a Yellow Dancer.

Also doing well were Hector Wilson from Bannockburn with 3 fish for 12lbs 12oz – best 7lbs on a Cut Throat Cat, Donald McMorchy, Fallin, 4 for 10lbs 12oz on a Dancer and Olive, Tom Stevenson, Fallin, 4for 10lbs 4oz – best 3lbs 8oz on a Dancer and Robert Chapman, Linlithgow, 5 for 12lbs 12oz on a Damsel. Week Ending 23rd November 2008

The fishery has been quite quiet over the past week - everyone saving for Christmas. The weather has been pretty stable but cooling quickly after lunchtimes but some excellent fishing has been had by those who have come out. Mr. Stewart took 1 for 3lbs 8oz and released 5, C Auld 2 for 5lbs, T Jarvie Snr. 1 for 3lbs and released 2 and Mr. Grant 2 for 5lbs 12oz. Mr Halliday released 4 nice fish, Muncie had a couple of fish, T Muir had a nice fish of 3lbs 8oz and Mr. Gracie from Saltcoats did well with releasing 5 fish including one blue estimated at about 6/7 lbs. Black and Green Lures, Damsels and Dancers have worked consistently and when there has been a breeze it is well worth trying a dry with a buzzer below. The floating lines seem best.

The bait pond has fished well with most anglers taking their limit but fish are moving up and down the levels so anglers

need to be changing their methods to find the fish. Cream and green power baits have been best this week.

SONIK, main Sponsors of The TROUTMASTERS 2009 Competition will be visiting the fishery with their Roadshow on the 13th of December - the full day’s format is not certain as yet but there will be a 2 hour competition with SONIK prizes. Call the fishery on 01292 571291 to ensure your place is booked for the SONIK Saturday.

Week Ending 9th Nov

Fishing last week was very hectic at times with fish rising and feeding heavily on the surface and sub surface. There have been good hatches of sedges, buzzers and spiders floating across the surface and, although a little more scarcer, the bigger fish are still chasing small fry around areas of weed. Mention must go to Jim Dunsmuir for his 5lbs 4oz rainbow that took one of Davy Dick’s deadly crunchers. Davy has also done well over the week with a dozen or more fish released. Hugh Taylor took 2 for 4lbs 8oz and released another 5, Hugh Munro has had a couple of good sessions releasing well into double figures and Mr. Gillingham fishing Coyle for the first time released 10 and took 2 for 4lbs 3oz. Finally, B Stewart too and, although a little more scarcer, the bigger fish are still chasing small fry around areas of weed.

Finally, B Stewart took 2 for 5lbs and released 5. Floating Lines have fished best all week with Crunchers, PTN's, Yellow Worms, Humungus and Damsels all working well. During rises it is well worth putting on small grey or white dries to have great surface sport.

The Bait Pond has produced full bags for those who have fished. Anglers on the bait have been few and far between over the past week or so and stockings have taken place as normal so lots of fish are cruising all water levels and feeding readily on natural food stuffs.

Week Ending 4th November

At last a week of settled conditions with the fishing much improved. The cold spell has put the fish down a little generally but as the sun warms a little the fish are back up on the surface. Jim Dunsmuir from Kilmarnock had a good session releasing 3 fish, Hugh Munro weighed in a lovely Blue of 5lbs and released 6 other fish, Mr Cunnall and Natalie released 7 fish and Mr. Strachan weighed in 3 for 7lbs 8oz. Messrs. Weaver and McLintock travelled through from Bathgate and were not disappointed weighing in 2 each for 10lbs 8oz. Mr Rodger weighed in 2 for 6lbs, Hugh Taylor weighed in 2 for 5lbs 12oz including a lovely conditioned brook trout Mr. Howie 2 fish for 5lbs 4oz, W Graham from Ayr weighed in 2 for 4lbs and Billy Dewar and Jim Kyle had a spectacular Saturday releasing 30 + fish between them. Floating Line setups are still working best and a variety of flies are working including Damsels and Creepers, Pheasant Tails, Diawl Bachs, Buzzers and the Leggy Bloodworm.

The Bait pond is now being stocked with some cracking Blues and has fished well all week. Young Erin Coyne (11) along with her Brother David (9) took 6 fish between them weighing in at 11lbs 8oz. Other excellent bags are being taken and Green Power Bait is doing the business.

Week Ending 6th October 2008

There was excellent fishing on the Fly Pond over the past week with Mr. McClain taking 2 for 6lbs and releasing 2, Davy Dick had a good week releasing into double figures, Ian Kilpatrick was hot on his heels releasing 8 and Mr. Jardine took 4 for 11lbs 8oz. Mr McPherson 4 for 10lbs. Mr McBride 4 for 10lbs 12oz and released 1.Ian Muncie released 5 fish ,Mr Hilland 1 for 2lbs 12oz and released 5 and Mr. Harvey 4 fish for 12lbs.

Saturday saw a visit from the Donny Hampson Club with 16 members enjoying a cracking days fishing despite torrential rain being on for most of the day. Mr McBride was top rod on the day with Mr Wilson and Miss Greaves coming second and third. A total of 47 fish for 96 lbs 7oz were taken by the 16 anglers and considering the poor conditions an average of 3 fish per angler was excellent. Floating line set ups teamed with the Yellow Dancer or Black Damsel has worked really well with the fish chasing the pin fry. Fish are still taking flies from the surface as the day warms up so small Nymphs fished sub-surface will take fish.

Week Ending 21st September 2008

Fishing is still a little up and down but definitely improving on the fly pond. J Taylor took 2 nice fish for 5lbs 4oz, Mr. Carlisle from Glasgow took 2 for 8lbs 4oz, Mr. Woods also from Glasgow took 3 for 8lbs 4oz and Mr. Hussan 3 for 10lbs. Mr. Howie released a cracking brownie estimated at about 8lbs, Messrs. Auld had a good day on Saturday taking 5 fish for 13lbs 8oz and releasing several more including a couple of really nice browns. Best tactics are floating lines or at most a midge tip as fish are rising and taking dries readily and small nymphs just below the surface.

The Bait Pond continues its spell of excellent fishing with good bags coming off with young Master McChesney taking 5 fish for 9lbs 8oz, Mr. Middleton 6 fish for 9lbs 8oz, Mr. Holland 5 fish for 8lbs 4oz and Mr. Pearson and friends took 7 fish between them for 16lbs. Messrs. Ash & Allan took 7 fish between them 12lbs, Mr. McNally 5 for 6lbs, Mr. Welsh 3 for 5lbs 5oz and Mr. Keir 4 for 6lbs 4oz. Best tactics have been bubble float using Power Bait – wasp grubs have also done quite well, power bait and maggots combined have also worked well.

Week Ending 14th September 2008

Changeable weather has again given us changeable fishing at the fishery. The fish are cruising about a foot below the surface and rising freely to drowned flies but not coming back to them – they are also chasing lures but again turning away at the last minute. Blobs and Crunchers have both been successful as have Olive F Flies fished sub surface.

Mr. McCabe released 8 fishing a big buzzer, Martin Brittan fishing his last evening session before returning back home to Scarborough released 4 fish all taken on dries. Davy and Ian had a good Sunday session taking a fish apiece and releasing 7 between them, B Robertson from Auchinleck took 2 fish for 4lbs 9oz, Messrs. Durkin and . Greenhall from Burnley enjoyed a day at the fishery taking 3 fish and releasing 9. The stocking this week comprised mainly of Tiger and Brook Trout giving the fishers something a little different to target over the coming weeks.

The Bait Pond continues to exceed all expectations with so many full bags we would need the whole column to name all the recipients. Mr. Malloy and friend took 7 fish between them for a total of 11lbs, Mr. Grimes 3 for 5lbs 2oz, Mr. Callan 2 fish for 3lbs 4oz and Mr. Frew 4 for 6lbs. Mr. Welsh 3 for 5lbs 5oz, Mr. Bridgewater from South Wales took 4 nice fish for 6lbs and Mr. Brown also took 4 for 7lbs. Power Bait and Worms are top of the menu.
