Cool easterly winds have plagued the fishery for the last few weeks and the fly life is well behind this time last year. At last the wind has turned westerly and with the warmer temperatures the Hawthorn flies are now out in abundance and the trout love them. Dries on the surface or Black Snatchers sub-surface have been very successful patterns but Buzzers have also put in an appearance with black and orange being the top combination.
John Russell, Prestonpans, had the best fish of the week, a really nice specimen of 16lbs on a Black Buzzer. Other notable fish included one at 10lb 8oz for Ross Wilson, North Berwick, on a Yellow Dancer which was also the pattern that accounted for another 10lb fish, this time taken by his friend Bill Slight fishing on the adjacent platform. What a double act! Paul Rae, Hawick, had one at 11lbs on catch and release returning a further 14 fish, mainly to the Rabbitiser and a Suspender Wickham’s. His fishing partner from Lilliesleaf, Gordon Scott, was not to be outdone as he caught and released eighteen! Week Ending 4th April 2010
The weather station at the fishery recorded an astonishing 72mm of rain in just over 24 hours last Wednesday. The fishery was shut for a day because there was no available access but despite the torrential rain and subsequent flooding the water level has now dropped and is clearing and producing fish mainly to lures fished deep and slow.
The best fish of the week was one at 16lbs 4oz taken on a Black Dancer by Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh and his son Martin also got in on the act by catching and releasing 13 fish in his session mainly on Olive lures. John MacKay from Leith had one at 14lbs on one of his special Corixa patterns, John Hay, Haddington, also had one at 14lbs on a Hot Head Damsel and M Shillinglaw, Edinburgh, used a White Fritz to bag yet another 14lb rainbow. Steve Rodger from Edinburgh had 2 for 11lbs on a Black & Green Nomad, Morpeth angler Keith Watson took 3 for 10lbs and released another 4 on a Black Dancer, Neil Keillor, Dunbar, used a selection of Dancers to catch and release 9 fish in a four hour session and B Chisholm had a nice fish of 8lbs 8oz on a Black & Green lure.
The water temperature has fallen back due to the rain of last week and lures are still likely to predominate in the near future but the longer term forecast gives us all hope of fishing with ‘naturals’ sooner rather than later.
