SWANSWATER (Stirling)

With the weather still very hot particularly in the second half of the week, the fishing remained challenging.  For much of the week the fish were higher in the water than they had been over the previous few weeks with many being taken around 2 to 3 feet down.  The area around the bridge was the most productive, with the boats also doing relatively well.   At the weekend the dam area also produced a good number of fish.   Buzzer, Montana, Diawl Bach, Cormorant, Dancer, Damsel, Kate McLaren and Ally McCoist were some of the most successful patterns fished on an intermediate line.   Water clarity is still very good and the temperature is around 17o-18oC.   The recent weather conditions have led to an increase in weed growth and a programme of removal is being undertaken.   The level in the Millpond has been dropped so that the weed can be tackled. The Meadow Pond has been cut and netted and a huge heap of weed was “harvested”.   Hopefully this will lead to an improvement in fishing conditions. The Fishery remains open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm
Amongst those catching fish this week was Stephen Mullin and son Liam, Pitlochry, 5 for 12lb including a Blue, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 12lb 8oz including a Tiger, plus 6 C&R, Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, 4 for 12lb including a Blue and a Tiger, Brian McPeake, Gargunnock, 4 for 10lb 8oz, including a Tiger, plus 2 C&R and Joe Malcolmson, Cumbernauld, 3 for 8lb 8oz. The fishing has been very quiet due to the extremely high water temperatures but those who persisted did well. Bruce Hunter from Edinburgh had 2 – best 8lbs on a Buzzer, Davy Smith, Dunbar had 1 for 8lbs 8oz on an Egg, C Green, Musselburgh 2 for 7lbs on Dries and S Kilpatrick from Edinburgh took 4 for 10lbs on a Cat’s Whisker.

SWANSWATER (Stirling)

With more overcast, though still warm, weather the fishing conditions improved this week.   There was also some rain which helped freshen up the ponds.   Water temperature dropped a degree or so and clarity remains very good.  The fish were general still pretty deep.   The most productive spots continue to be the deeper water from the dam wall to the big tree and the area around the burn mouth and the bridge.   At times the far bay was also fishing well.   Most fish were taking lures or nymphs with favourite patterns including Ally McCoist, Cat’s Whisker, Dancer, Montana, Cormorant, Damsel, Hare’s Ear and Buzzers.   Some anglers also had success with wet flies such as Black Pennell, Spider and Claret Bumble.   Trout of all varieties – Rainbow, Blue, Gold, Tiger and Brown – feature in the catch returns this week with some superb examples of each being landed. As the water temperature is still high, we would ask that anglers on catch and release bring their fish in to the net as quickly as possible to avoid stress and allow the fish time to recover before letting them swim away. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm
Amongst those taking fish this week were Ross Paton, Perth, 6lb 8oz Gold, Tam Baillie, Kincardine, in three visits, 7 for 22lb including 4lb 12oz Light Blue, a Blue and 2 Tigers, Joe Potts, Inchinnan, 5 for 13lb including a Tiger, Ricky Goodwin, Larbert, in two visits, 5 for 14lb 4oz, including a Tiger and Marius Botezatu, Stirling, in two visits, 5 for 13lb 4oz including a Blue, plus 3 C&R. Despite the extremely hot, dry weather there has still been some excellent returns on the ponds. The Boathouse has definitely been the place to go as the fresh incoming water helps to keep oxygen levels higher and water temperatures lower. The surrounding trees provide extra shade and the fish have responded well to carefully presented flies. Ian Barlow produced a superb performance to return 30 fish taken mainly on Buzzers. Jock Leslie also excelled releasing 24 fish taken on a variety of methods and Mr. Skivington released a creditable 18 fish. Mr. Ross took four fish for a total of 9lbs 4o. Most of these catches were rainbows but there were also some fine blue trout and the occasional nice brown trout. Black or Olive Buzzers, Diawl Bachs and Damsel variations were the preferred patterns. The Burnside Pool has been somewhat erratic this week – very difficult on some days and reasonably productive on others. Tam Costello had a memorable morning returning 10 fish including rainbows of 9lbs and 7lbs 8oz on Buzzers Ian Barlow showed his consistency returning 9 on catch/release and Alan Gray released 8 fish. On the keep ticket side of things Alex took two fish for 8lbs 8oz and Mr. Jamieson had three for 7lbs 8oz. The any legal method pool, the Woodside, produced a number of steady returns, mainly to Powerbait fished deep under a float or ledgered. Mr. Preston took three rainbows for a total weight of 7lbs 8oz and Mr. Wales had two for 5lbs 4oz.

WOODBURN (Broughty Ferry)

SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The change in weather towards the end of the week with more overcast and slightly cooler conditions led to a great improvement in the fishing.   The fish were still a bit hard to catch but many more were taking.   When the sun was out the boats were doing best as the fish headed back to the depths.   At other times the area around the bridge and the burn mouth was full of fish and they were not far below the surface.   Many Tigers were to be found in this area along with a good few Browns.   For most of the week the best times to fish were mornings and evenings with the heat in the afternoons making things trickier.  The water clarity remains very good although the water temperature is still quite hot at 18oC.   The light rain on Sunday has hopefully refreshed  the water and will lead to even better conditions in the coming week. The most successful flies this week included nymphs, wets and lures, with favourite patterns including Diawl Bach, PTN, Hare’s Ear, Damsel, Buzzer, Bibio, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker and Ally McCoist.   Dry flies, such as Muddlers, also took a few fish. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm
A selection of those catching fish this week were Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 16lb 8oz including 6lb 8oz Gold, Hugh McLean, Oban, 3 for 10lb 12oz including a Tiger

SWANSWATER (Stirling)

This week saw wall to wall sunshine and record high temperatures in Stirling. This exceptionally hot spell meant water temperatures soared to 20 degrees centigrade on Thursday evening but has now settled back down around 17 degrees. Although the fish were generally being caught quite deep, when the sun became less intense fish could be seen feeding on the surface. Best fishing was mostly had either early in the morning or later in the evening, although Hugh McLean from Oban tempted 4 fish during the hottest part of the day, between 4 and 5 pm on a Diawl Bach 18 inches below the surface. So in effect the conditions meant if you got your tactics right, good fishing could be had throughout the week. Due to an increase in water being released from reservoirs up stream, there is now substantially more water coming through the system, keeping the water topped up and fresh. This week a wide variety of flies were successful including lures and wet flies but the best method was fishing nymphs on an intermediate line retrieved at various speeds.
