SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The rain on Tuesday night was much needed and welcome.   It freshened up the water and raised the level.   Water clarity remained excellent despite the rain.   The water temperature dropped from 16oC to 12.5oC due to the rain and cool nights, but it is now on the way back up again.  The second half of the week was bright and warm although a cool breeze kept things very pleasant.   The fishing conditions were good for most of the week with the fish sitting around 2 to 3 feet down and looking for something to chase.  Buzzers, wet flies, including Kate McLaren, Black Spider and Bibio, and the occasional dry fly such as Sedge and Muddler were the best patterns.   Two youngsters caught their first fish on the fly on Saturday.   William Jones was fishing with his dad and younger brother when he hooked a 3lb Rainbow on Swanswater; Riley Lachut was being shown the ropes by Charles Devine and landed a 2lb 4oz Rainbow from the Millpond.   Needless to say, both boys were delighted with their catches.

SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The much needed and very welcome rain this week freshened up the water and reduced the temperature by a couple of degrees.   It also helped to top up the ponds.  The exceedingly strong winds and showers on Thursday also stirred things up a bit although the water remained very clear.   The Browns and Tigers particularly appreciated the fresh water coming down the burn and several were caught from the area around the bridge and the burn mouth.   Rainbows and Blues were to be found all round the main pond although at times they were somewhat reluctant to be caught.  Several anglers reported missing or losing fish as their flies were followed in to the bank.  Best tactic was to fish a wet fly or nymph on an intermediate line with favourite patterns being Damsel, Diawl Bach, Bloodworm, Hare’s Ear, Buzzer, Black Pennell, and Spider.   One angler enjoyed a huge amount of sport stripping a muddler very quickly across the surface while fishing from the boat, but generally the fish were around 2 to 4 feet down. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm
Amongst those catching fish this week was Ian Renwick, Loanhead, 2 for 10lb including 7lb Rainbow, Danny Doherty, Denny, 5 for 14lb including 2 Tigers, plus 1 Tiger C&R, Nan Morrison, Stirling, in two visits, 3 Browns and 2 Tigers for 10lb 12oz, Mick Stubberfield, Stirling, 4 for 10lb including a Brown, Kevin Gold, Stirling, 3 for 10lb 8oz and Frank Barr, Falkirk, 3 for 9lb 4oz plus 6 C&R including a Brown and a Tiger. SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The week started with a couple of cloudy days and some excellent fishing.   However as the week went on, the hot sunny conditions made things a bit tougher.   The fish were to be found deep down and a slow retrieve was needed to tempt them.   The bank between the dam and the big tree was the best area, although Tigers, Browns and big Golds were seen cruising around the bridge.   The boats were also having some success as anglers were able to get down deeper further from the shore. Some evenings there was a slight rise particularly if there was some cloud cover.   On Sunday and Monday nymphs and wet flies were taking fish, but for most of the week lures, buzzers and bloodworm were most successful...   Favourite patterns included Gold-head Damsel, Green Nymph, Dancer, Tadpole, Buzzer, Bloodworm, Bibio and Black Spider. The Fishery is open every day from 8.00am to 10.00pm.
