Sunrise over the Cairngornms

October 2003 at dawn heading over to the Deveron for a couple of days fishing. Deer on the hills nearly distracted me then this sight came into view, the Cairngorms swimming in a sea of early morning mist.

As we wander our merry way around our fishing haunts we are often privileged of see nature at its best. I have shared pools with otters surfacing a rods length from me giving me a nonchalant once over, seen otter cubs tumbling down through bluebells on a steep bank into the Boat Pool at Boat of Turtory. I have seen sunsets and sunrises that linger to this day, banks of wild flowers so delicately beautiful, ospreys fishing, raptors swooping, Mad March Hares cavorting. So many memorable sights and, as too often is the case, I had no camera with me.

Luckily, on occasion I have had my camera with me, like the one I took the photo of my biggest ever salmon with, which was stolen along with my car and several bottles of Xmas malt whisky, hmm maybe not so lucky. Off course not every camera has been stolen, sometimes, in a senior moment I just forget to pick them up, like the brand knew video camera bought as a casting instructional aid for the Spinfish Spey casting course. It was handed in to the police by some walkers, which went a long way to restoring my faith in humanity.

Having a camera is a burden to a busy and all too often submerged angler, consequently so much has to remain a memory – however there are times when everything comes together, and that is what this feature is about. Here are some of the photographs I did manage to take, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did experiencing what is captured on film (or pixels).
