SANA

Scottish National Anglers Association

(AGM, to be held Sunday 11th March at 2pm in the Green Hotel, Kinross)

SANA is the governing body for the sport of game angling in Scotland. Now I can hear people out there saying whoop de doop, why do we need a bunch of busy bodies out there governing our fishing. On the face of it the first sniff does seem fishy. Do we need governing, do we need someone telling us what is right and what is wrong, do we need to listen to them at all? They don't govern what I do, I am fly fisher doing what I've done since childhood and doing it my way.

Now take a second sniff, there is something really fishy out there with power and money that doesn't have your interests at heart. On your own you count very little in this world of corporate, government and environmental concerns. Do you think it would make any difference if you lay down in front of the next bulldozer building a hydro electric scheme on your favourite fishing beat; were fighting a lone battle against netting and commercial fishing; were weeping over the destruction of your river because of pollution or abstraction? Lets face it, on your own you count for nowt.

SANA is recognised for its representative role in the Scottish fishing scene, working with related bodies and environmental interests 'to protect and enhance the Scottish aquatic environment'. Whether you are one of the 31,000 members or not, SANA lobbies in your interests getting you better access to fishing, challenging the ravages of fish farming, encouraging youngsters into the sport.

There are 5 Committees beavering away on your behalf: The Migratory Fish Committee, Non Migratory Fish Committee, Youth Committee, Coaching Committee and Competitions Committee.

The Migratory Fish and the Non Migratory Fish Committees are working on many issues including; predation by seals, cormorants and mergansers; access legislation; the Aquaculture and Fisheries Bill; access legislation and concerns about parasites (Gs) and the invasion of none indigenous species such as Signal Crayfish and Mitten Crab.

The Coaching Committee is creating a development programme for professional fishing coaches that will enhance coaching standard in Scotland in the years to come. Training for coaches includes Child Protection and completion of Disclosure Scotland. SANA coaches provided over 600 free coaching sessions last year.

The Youth Committee is working to encourage youngsters to come into the sport and parents  have the assurance that their offspring are in safe hands with qualified and trained SANA coaches.

The Competition Committee runs several national competitions including the worlds oldest fishing match, the Scottish National Trout Fly Fishing Competition, a women's competition and a competition for persons with disabilities enhancing inclusion in this very inclusive sport.

Whether you are a lone fisher, club member, competitor, newcomer to the sport or a hopeful youth, SANA has your interests at heart.

Now I ask you if fishing needs a governing body to argue in your favour against the strong and vociferous Anti Blood Sports lobby, or get Scottish Water to reduce abstraction from the Spey or improve water treatment facilities?

The answer is quite simply yes you do. One is the loneliest number but working as one through the national governing body we can protect the future of our sport.
