Elizabeth and Andrew would like to wish all anglers and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year and weather permitting will be open between Christmas and New Year but if in doubt please telephone:  1764 682 287 or Andrew on 07836 312 647 for the coarse fishery.

4th December 2011

It has been a quiet week with the rain flooding everywhere, the worst being the rivers flooding the fields. Owner, Elizabeth Jackson comments ‘’ I do not think I have seen the Earn so bad before.    The water level here dropped quickly whenever the rain stopped and now we have a slight covering of the white stuff.    We just have to take each day at a time and phone if in doubt  about the weather here, it can be so different only ten miles away’’

When the water was coloured the flies doing the best were black and dark flies about two to three feet down but after  a couple of days all colours were catching again just under the surface.

On Sunday the Falcon FFC had a very cold morning catching 37 fish for 82lbs 8oz with Allan Borthwick having the heaviest basket with 5 fish for 11lbs 8oz on a Hot Head Damsel.   They were all glad to get their hot soup that they bring with them at the morning break to heat them up!

30th October 2011

Last week the weather was very changeable weather and the forecast is not always right which unfortunately makes the anglers stay away when it actually turns out to be a better day than the forecast indicated.    From now on we just have to take each day as it comes and hope it is not such a severe winter as last year.   The fishing has been good all season because the water never got as warm as usual with the poor summer but we have had the wettest year I can remember and certainly the worst harvest we have ever had.

The fish are still moving on the top and there have been a few anglers still using and getting fish on the dry fly, but it is mainly the Damsel, Hare's Ear, Yellow Dancer and various Fritz patterns that have been doing well.

The water has been fishing very well with a wide variety of flies, dries, damsels, yellow dancer and various Fritz patterns.   The dry fly has still been working as the fish have been taking on the top or just under the surface.   This season has been fantastic for fishing dries and it has been because of the abundance of natural fly life and the fact there has been very little sun to warm up the water so the fish have not had to go to the bottom.   With clear water and seeing the fish taking your fly has meant lots of great sport has been enjoyed this season.

Jock Esplin from Bonnybridge has 3 fish for 13lbs 8oz – best 6lbs 8oz on a Gold Tail Damsel, Leon De-Lange, Crieff, 2 for 8lbs – best 5lbs on a CDC, Leonard Tait, Crieff 3 for 8lbs – best 4lbs on a CDC and Frank Armstrong, Bankfoot, 4 for 10lbs on Dries.

nice and warm some of the time! Last Sunday there were just loads of these beautiful electric blue damsels flitting all around the banks. There has been spring, summer and winter weather last week but hopefully the weather on Friday will have warmed up the water. When it has been warm there has been a lot of fly activity on the top of the water with some good rises of brown trout as well as rainbows.  The tench have started to go round the margins trying to spawn. These are the doctor fish of the water so it is important that they breed, as they have done for many years, as they help keep the water clean. With the changeable weather the fish have been taking on the top and down to about two feet depending on the wind. A floating line works here all year with just a longer leader and gold head to take it down a little. Recently the fish have been taking quite slowly with a wide variety of lures and dries doing best.

With the fine dry weather forecast to last all week work should soon be finished and of course regular updates will be made regarding the re-opening

Week Ending Sunday, 20 February, 2011

The latest news from the fishery is that work is progressing well on the deepening out process and will be on-going for at least another week. Once the digging is complete it will of course take some time for the level to be raised again and the water to clear sufficiently. Regular updates will be made on how things are progressing

Week Ending 30 January 2011

Work is slowly progressing at the fishery as preparation gets underway for the deepening of the left hand side and round the back of the island. The water level was lowered last week – incredibly it took almost seven days to do this. However it is hoped that the machinery will be moved in this week to start the deepening process.
The coarse fishery unfortunately still has several inches of ice but if the forecast for much milder weather is correct then it should open again fairly soon.

Note to angling writers. More information will be given as progress continues

Sunday, 16 January, 2010

The ice had an incredible shift on Monday night with now more than half the water being ice free.

Fishery owner Elizabeth Jackson says “It is just great to see the snow nearly all away for the first time since the 28th November - I was being to think it was never going to happen. I know everyone is sick of the sight of snow and icy roads and pavements and it is fantastic to see green fields again. If this thaw continues I hope to lower the level of the water at the end of this week with work starting next Monday to deepen the roadside and round the island.”

The fishery will remain closed until this work is completed.

Note to angling writers. APS will bring you regular updates on work in progress at Orchill

Sunday, 09 January, 2010

Unfortunately the week end snow coupled with the return of severe frosts – it was -7 degrees on Thursday night - it is again very slippy underfoot with the ice under the snow. Elizabeth at the fishery reckons it will need to go up to 10 above to get rid of the amount of ice that is still on the water.

Once this happens the fishery will be closed again for a spell this time to allow the excavators and dumpers in to deepen right up the left hand side of the water and right round the island which will take a good two to three weeks to do with mild weather. This work would have started this Wednesday the fishery had been free of ice

Note to angling writers. APS will bring you regular updates on work in progress at Orchill

Rab will be sorely missed not only by his family and Ada but all his fishing, gliding and country and western friends and many more who will remember his cheery smile. We have had so many good and sad times here over the last 15 years and each year we raise the money for Strathcarron Hospice in memory of Rab's late wife Letty. We will all be able to remember the humour and funny incidents we have all shared over the years. At long last the ice has finally disappeared and the fishing is back to normal. Most of the anglers coming up to Orchill are shocked at the amount of snow that is still lying about – as owner Elizabeth Jackson says "It is a different world up here and it is still best to phone to make sure I am free of ice. I have no faith in the weather forecast as it has been wrong so many times this very long winter'.

The water is extremely cold so the fish are taking very slowly on a variety of colours and included in the recent catches were Allan McComisky from Moodiesburn who used a Sunburst lure to catch 4 for 10lbs 8oz, John Stevenson, Cowie, 3 for 7lbs 4oz on a Black Lure, Allan Buchan, Bannockburn, 3 for 6lbs 8oz on Buzzers, Bob White, Alloa, 3 for 8lbs 8oz on a Green & Black Fritz and John Hutchison, Alloa, 2 for 5lbs on a Green & Black Fritz. As everyone saw on the television the Braco area had a lot of snow on Thursday and no electric but thankfully most of the snow has now disappeared but at one time it was lying at a depth of almost two feet. All the access roads are now open.

Week Ending 21st February 2010

Last week-end it looked like the fishery was going to be clear of ice this week with cloud cover and snow, instead the temperature plummeted to - 5 to 6 every night so the water has been mostly iced up again this week with only a few anglers being able to fish.

Anglers are advised to phone to see what it is like as the water is so cold that it freezes very quickly. The fish are still taking very slowly and a bit deeper than normal for here with Pinkie, Black and Green Fritz Yellow Dancer and Orange Fritz

As owner Elizabeth Jackson says "With the very changeable weather we just have to take each day as it comes and make the best of the good days, such as Wednesday which was beautiful"

With the help of the pump there has been a slow thaw of the ice on the water this week with more than half the stands now free of ice. The anglers who braved the cold last week-end were catching fish near the bottom and mid water with plenty of fish plucking at their flies. The Pink Fritz was doing well along with the Yellow Dancer, Black and Green Fritz and Buzzers.

It was a very quiet week with the water being partly frozen even with the pump running as there has been up to -5 degrees of frost. It has been lovely when the sun is shining as it looks like a winter wonderland. The anglers who have been fishing have caught them very slowly and sometimes under the edge of the ice.

The fishery will be open over the holidays weather permitting the only day that is booked is Monday the 28th December, Jock's bottle Day, which he has fully booked. Please phone to see what the weather is like up here as it can change so much overnight. We do not have global warming is this part of the country!!!

Elizabeth Jackson would like to thank all anglers who have supported her during the year and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Week Ending 13th December 2009

First of all owner Elizabeth Jackson would like to stress very clearly that no fish were lost recently at Orchill as there isa grid on the outlet. It is difficult enough keeping a fishery open during the winter months so stupid rumours like this are perfectly ridiculous and most unhelpful. Elizabeth explains that it was their field at the back of the loch that was flooded and in any exceptionally high water situation the fish all go to the bottom and stay there. Any fishery or fish farm owner take every precaution not to lose fish as they are too expensive and cannot be insured. Luckily most of the regulars know this and have not believed this wild story.

With the frosty weather the fish have been getting caught at various depths, very slowly with a lot of fish being lost with anglers striking too quickly. Black and Green Fritz, Yellow Dancer, Damsel and Cat have been taking most of the fish.

The Falcon Club had a very good social day spending most of it in the chalet eating and telling stories as it was freezing outside and as always they enjoyed their day regardless of the weather. All in all they took 22 fish for 47lbs 8oz and lost as many more whilst Willie Barr won the morning comp with 5 fish for 9lbs 4oz.

Also doing well were John Stevenson from Cowie with 4 fish for 12lbs 4oz on a Black & Green Fritz, John Knox, Cowdenbeath, 4 fish for 12lbs 4oz on a Mini Cat, Matt Kirk, Helensburgh, 4 for 8lbs 4oz on a Black & Green and Eddie McGowan, Helensburgh, used a Black & Green to take 2 for 5lbs 8oz. Week Ending 6th December 2009

It was been another quiet week with the weather changing from day to day. The dry frosty days are the more pleasant for doing anything including fishing and the fish have been varying from two to three feet down to on the bottom depending on the weather. The usual flies are doing well including the Damsel, Buzzers, Yellow Dancer and various Fritz patterns.

Owner, Elizabeth Jackson has closed the water for a few days until the ground gets a chance to dry up. With the heavy rain all day on Thursday the sand and gravel got washed off the bottom drive and into the burn which overflowed like a sea of water down the flat newly sown grass area and through the fence into the pond making the path like a river. The fish of course are fine lying in the bottom out of harm's way. Elizabeth said " I hope to open again on Wednesday (25th November) once the sand has settled and hopefully the ground has dried up a bit".

Week Ending 15th November 2009

The fish have been varying in the depth they are being caught from day to day with the weather but a very slow retrieve is working as the water is now a lot colder.

After the wild morning on Saturday the weather settled and the Bannockburn 312 Club had a good day on Sundaytaking 56 fish for 113lbs 8ozwith David Lewis taking the heaviest basket for 17lbs with the heaviest tipping the scales at 5lbs 12oz – it was taken on a Yellow Dancer.

Last week the fish were taking very slowly with again a wide variety of flies like Buzzers, small Nymphs, Damsel, Black/green Fritz, White/Green Fritz, Yellow Dancer and the Cat's Whisker are doing the best. The fish have been hovering around the middle and in the shallower water and although they are showing on the top they are not taking so easily. There is of course still plenty of natural food as well as fly life still around.

Last Sunday the Stirling Castle Club had a good day with the morning being better than the afternoon when the wind got very strong and prevented them for fishing the right side of the water. They caught 33 fish for 102 lbs with the heaviest basket going to Gary McClurg with 5 fish for 15 lbs.

Week Ending 4th October 2009

The first of October certainly came in with a drop in the temperature although it was a dry sunny day so a lot of the fish have been lying out in the middle or up in the shallows. Small flies fished slowly have been doing well but as usual there have been a wide variety of flies and lures catching fish.
