Grantown on Spey Association Water

Dulnain Mouth on the River Spey in Winter with the Snow Covered Cairngorms in the Background

What a season they have had on the Association water at Grantown on Spey, one of the best in years with a total of 449 taken. The numbers are impressive with 167 fish being taken in September alone with August being the second best month with 81 fish and May a close third with 79 fish reported.

The breakdown is 269 salmon averaging 9.7lbs and 180 grilse averaging 3.93 lbs. The biggest fish was taken on the fly in the Lurg and weighed in at a hefty 21lbs. There was also a 19lb fish and two 18lb fish.

Most of the fish taken between February and March fell to the fly while many of the later fish fell to the spinner or worm which has caused some debate about whether bait fishing should be allowed on the basis thatPicture river Spey Old Bridge Grantown bait anglers tend to be sedentary and releasing a well hooked fish caught on bait is notoriously difficult. No doubt the debate will continue. Interestingly the bulk of the fish taken in the last half of the season were in the range 3 to 5 lbs with very few fish reaching double figures, a trend reported around the country in recent years.

On top of all of this there were 540 sea trout averaging 2.31lbs and a brown trout of five and  half pounds was caught and returned.

Looks like things are on the up and up for this great value water. For much more information just log on to the Association web site: www.speyfishing-grantown.co.uk
