Loch Awe Angling Improvement Association was set up to manage the fishing on Loch Awe and Loch Avich. Working closely with the Argyll Fisheries Trust they are responsible for the great improvements in the loch which has seen it produce 4 British Record wild brown trout in recent years.

Awe undoubtedly has a British record pike in it yet to be caugh (record so far 35lbs)and there are escapee rainbows that have flourished in the loch to become serious contenders in the big fish stakes. The loch also has a good stock of coarse fish, 1lb plus pike and roach around Kilchum Castle and Dalavich, something for everyone on Loch Awe.

St Marys Loch

Fishing for wild brown trout, pike, perch and eels on this Borders gem of a loch. Bank or boat fishing, they have 14ft and 16ft boats for hire at very reasonable rates. Largest trout was in 2009 weighing in at 8lbs 6ozs. Any legal method allowed, they say to use a wire trace if spinning because the chances of a pike are high.

As for pike the potential is great. Lots of good pike dead bait is allowed, fly works too, and trawling a rapala seems to work very well.

Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond

Has an interesting biology because it has two distinct environments. The northern half of the loch is a typical glacial formed, deep narrow highland loch while the southern end is shallow and more akin to a typical lowland loch. The southern environment suites coarse fish. There are roach, dace, rudd, pike and perch. There are also powan which you should return immediately if you catch them as they are very much an endangered species.

Loch Lomond is probably one of the best pike fishing venues anywhere. The loch is big, really big and you should search around for information about where to fish rather than waste your time plodding about. Someone once told me there were good pike near Balmaha, then I had a look and realised that I might as well have been told that there are lots of haddock in the North Sea!

Balmaha is recommended as well as the area around Luss. Endrick Mouth where the monster pike skull was found is also a hot spot. There is excellent fishing in late spring when the coarse fish run up the Endrick to spawn.

Live bait is not allowed as in the past people have used ruffe which have have escaped or been dumped in he loch at the end of a fishing session and multiplied becoming a serious problem because they eat the eggs of native species of fish.

Membership applications to the Secretary, Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association, PO box 3559, Glasgow, G71 7SJ or call 0141 781 1545.

For permits go to http://www.lochlomondangling.com/permits they have sellers all over Central Scotland.
