Canals Trust


The Canals Trust have over 2,000 miles of waterway to look after for the many interest groups who use them. With so much water it is no wonder that fishing is high on the list of activities.

The Trust issues a Waterway Wanderers Permit that entitles you to fish on an impressive amount of water throughout England and Wales (for just £20).

Glyncornel Angling Association have 15 miles of fishing on the Rhondda from the Bwlch Mountains to Treochy then down to Trehafod.

They stock the river regulary adding to wild stocks, brown trout to over 4lb are not uncommon. The river now has one of the highest water quality ratings, just shows you how resilient nature is if you stop messing with it.

Season tickets avaiable for Glycornel Lake and river which are reasonably priced, no day tickets. You can also get a river only season permit which is inexpensive given the quality of the fish being caught.

You cannot get a ticket on the bank and the club are very strict, they will prosecute.

Glyncornel Lake


Run by Glyncornel Angling Association, season tickets only for this fishery. Included in the lake permits is fishing on 15 miles of the river Rhondda which is stocked regularly with brown trout and fish to 4lbs plus are not uncommon..

The lake is stocked with brown trout and rainbows, minimum size 3lbs (fishery records 15lb 10oz for a rainbow and 15lb 8ozs for a brown trout.).

Season tickets for the Lake and river are reasonably priced, no day tickets. You cannot get a ticket on the bank and the club are very strict, they will prosecute.

The club also runs regular competions on the the lake.

Llyn Fawr

URAA have had the fishing on the 24 acre Llyn Fawr and the upper river Rhondda since 1957.

Lyyn Fawr's gin clear waters are stocked with rainbows and brown trout from the fish farm run by URAA, and fine looking fish they are, fully finned and plump. The river is stocked with brownies.

The fishery is open from 7.30am to 6pm 7 days a week, season 3rd March to 15th Novemeber. Membership is well priced with discounts for OAPs and juniors. Day tickets available.

Angling Club Pysgota Clwb


Aberdare and District Angling Association


ADAA have fishing on the Nant Meol reservoir located between Aberdare and Merthyr. Fly only for rainbows averaging 2lbs with fish to 7lbs being caught from time to time

The Association have put in a lot of work to ensure the fishing is accessible with good paths and ramps for wheelchair users and 4 casting platforms.

They have a container now which is utilised as a fishing hut with facilities for a cuppa.

Season tickets, adult, family and junior (15 and under), discounts for blue badge holder.

Fishing for brown trout on the Lwyd from Chapel Lane Bridge down stream to Burtons Biscuits.

There is a platform for disabled anglers about 400 yards upstream on the Llanyrafon Park Bridge.

Osprey Fly Fishing Association


Based in the Abercorn / Pontpridd area OFFA have beats on the rivers Taff, Cynon and Clydach. They also have a block booking on the Beacons Reservoir allowing members to fish without additional charge.

The river fishing is for brown trout with some salmon and sea trout arriving summer to back end and for grayling. The trout season is 3rd March to 30th September fly and spinners with debarbed hooks, grayling fly only from 1st October to 28th February. All migratory fish are mandatory catch and release.

Rhondda Angling Association


Rhondda AA manage the fishing on a lake Darren Park in Ferndale, Llyn y Forwyn, a 2.5 acre coarse fishery. The lake has some specimen fish with carp to high twenties and one pike that weighed in at 33lbs (now deceaed). In addition there are good stocks of bream to 5lbs, roach, rudd, perch and tench were added just a few years ago. Permits from the bailiff on the bank or from Dylans Pet Shop in the High Street in Ferndale. No bivvies allowed.

There is a tarmac path arong the lake making it very accessible to disabled anglers. For people easily spooked please ignore that the lake in legend is the home of Nelferch, an ancient enchantress, a 30lb pike would make you forget!.
