Clyde and Clyde System

The Clyde rises in the Borders hills near Moffat and offers exceptional trout and grayling fishing in gin clear water. The ongoing rehabilitation of the lower Clyde which was, until recently, deplorably polluted has made it possible for salmon and sea trout to re-establish themselves in this once prolific river.

As with all major rivers in Scotland the Clyde is covered by a Protection Order under the Freshwater and Fisheries Act. Because of the pollution problem the Clyde has become reknowned as a trout and  grayling water and the effect of the Protection Order has been to enhance access to fishing as there are few conflicts with salmon interests. Fishing permits are available along the length of the river from Angling Clubs, Post Offices, shops and hotels.

Kelvin

Kelvin AC

The Kelvin was not so long ago one of the casualties of industrialisation but like so many rivers that suffered in the past it is recovering. Rising in the Kilsyth hills it flows for 23 miles before it enters the Clyde and benefits from the recovery of that major river with not only a good head of trout but salmon and sea trout are returning.

Kelvin AA offer 34K of fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Fishing extends from the meeting with the Clyde in Partick right in the centre of Glasgow and up to Wyndford way past Kilsyth.

Season tickets are available at very reasonable price from any good tackle shop in Glasgow.

Leven (Dumbartonshire)

Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association

Has an interesting biology because it has two distinct environments. The northern half of the loch is a typical glacial formed, deep narrow highland loch while the southern end is shallow and more akin to a typical lowland loch. The southern environment suites coarse fish. There are roach, dace, rudd, pike and perch. There are also powan which you should return immediately if you catch them as they are very much an endangered species.

LLAIA have a lease on some of the fishing on the Endrick and Gairloch as well as fishing in the Loch Lomond and the the rivers Leven and the Fruin. They also have fishing in the estuary.

The loch and river offer a variety of fishing opportunities from wild brown trout, salmon and sea trout, coarse fish and massive pike (there was the famed Endrick pike found dead in 1934 at the mouth of the Endrick, estimates range between 50 to 70lbs).

Membership applications to the Secretary, Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association, PO box 3559, Glasgow, G71 7SJ or call 0141 781 1545.

For permits go to http://www.lochlomondangling.com/permits they have sellers all over Central Scotland.
