5. SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The week started with dreich, damp weather and there was rain or heavy showers most days until Saturday which was a fine day.  On the days when there was little or no breeze the fishing was more challenging.   Floating or intermediate lines were needed with the fish mostly in the top 2 to 3 feet although they were a little deeper at the start and end of the week.   On Wednesday fish were to be found in the Far Bay but were well spread out all round the main pond for the rest of the week until Saturday when many moved up to the top end behind the wooded island with both the roadside and the far side fishing well.   The weed that has cursed this area all summer has now died back sufficiently to allow good fishing there.  The most successful patterns this week included the usual lures - Cat’s Whisker and Dancer; wet flies such as Bibio and Black Spider; Diawl Bach, Cormorant and Buzzers.
Fishery opening hours are now Monday to Wednesday 8.00am to 6.00pm; Thursday to Sunday 8.00am to 7.00pm
Several anglers on both fly and bait caught one or two fish with those doing slightly better including Andrew Johnstone, 2 for 9lb 8oz including 6lb 8oz Rainbow, Alan Armstrong, Dollar, 3 for 10lb 8oz including 5lb 8oz Gold and a Tiger, Alan Knox, Peebles, 4 for 11lb including a Blue, plus 2 C&R, Gary Stewart, Glasgow, 4 for 10lb 12oz including 3lb 8oz Blue and 2 Golds and Danny Doherty, Denny, 4 for 10lb 8oz including a Gold. 5. SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The continued drop in water temperature at the start of the week led to some really good fishing with lots of tigers and browns once again featuring in the catch returns. it was a fairly quiet week angler numbers wise but those heading out early on in the week were rewarded with some good sport, with the majority of the fish being caught in the top 3 feet of water. Those venturing out in the nicer weather on Friday also had a lot of success but by Saturday the bright sun and slight rise in water temperature meant the fish had gone deeper and were harder to tempt. The fish are widespread in Swanswater with no areas appearing to hold more fish than others. Best fly patterns were Dancer, Cat, Montana, Pheasant Tail, buzzer and Stalking bug. Maggots were the most successful on the bait pond, with lots of different species featuring highly in the catch returns. Best bags on the fly included Alex Wilkie, Glasgow, 5 for 16lb 4oz including a Gold a Blue and 2 Browns, Donald McMurchie, Fallin, 4 for 16lb 12oz including 3 Golds, biggest 5lb 12oz and 5lb 4oz, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 12lb including a gold, Gordon Ferguson, Coatbridge, 3 for 10lb 4oz including 5lb Rainbow and 2 Golds and Davy Quinn, Dunfermline, 3 for 9lb. 5. SWANSWATER (Stirling)

The week started warm and sunny becoming wetter and windier as it went on.  From midweek there were frequent showers turning to rain on Friday.   The water was slightly coloured on Saturday as a result of Friday’s rain but other than that it remains clear with the water temperature dropping by 1oC over the course of the week.  Most days the fish were to be found in the top 3 feet of the water with the Golds still very visible in all the ponds.   Some days the fish were more active than others and were attacking flies aggressively.  On other days takes were much softer.  With the water cooling the fishing is improving with the fish being more “switched on.  As fishery managers it is always good to get July and August behind us and settle into better conditions as the autumn comes in. Best flies this week included the usual lures - Fritz, Dancer, Cat’s Whisker; nymphs such as PTN, Diawl Bach and Cormorant; Buzzers; and some dries including Black Spider, Daddy Long Legs and Sedge.
Again this week there were several anglers managing to hold on to one or two fish but some of those doing a bit better included Charles Findlater, Stirling, 3 for 11lb 12oz including 5lb 12oz Blue and a Tiger, Frank Barr, Falkirk, 4 for 10lb including a Gold and a Brown, Laurence Eddie, Grangemouth, 2 for 6lb 4oz including a Brown, George Dobbie, Glasgow, 2 for 5lb 4oz including a Gold and Craig Orr 3lb 8oz Rainbow from the Millpond. Dougie Forbes caught and released 7 including a Tiger estimated at 8lb, Steve McQueen caught and released 4, Dougie Lewis caught and released 3, John McGoughey caught and released 3 and Robert Brown caught and released 3.
There were a good number of bait fishers out this week, many of whom had one or two fish, but amongst those doing well were Agris and Monta Kalns shared 6 for 12lbs 8oz including 5 Golds, Martin Prowe and William Wilson shared 4 for 9lbs including 2 Golds and a Blue, Jonathan Russell 3 for 8lb including 2 Golds, Gordon Anderson 3 Golds for 6lbs, A Zarina 3 Golds for 6lbs and John Pearson 3lb 4oz Rainbow. Orange, Brown and Green Power Bait, Mouse Tails and Maggots were attracting the fish in the bait pond where the fish were well spread out and being caught from many different platforms.

6. WOODBURN (Milton of Campsie)

With the much cooler and wet weather no with us the water temperature now dropping nicely getting the trout back in the feeding mood with Buzzers and Dries being their preferred choice. There have been some good catches recently with as usual some hefty specimens featuring in the catches. The heaviest fish recently was a whopper of 14lbs 8oz included in a bag if 3 c/r posted Duncan Stewart and close behind was Johnny Curran who had 3 c/r and returned one at 14lbs 2oz. Also included amongst the double figure fish was K Houghton with 2 for 6lbs and returned one at 11lbs, Mr. Duncan from Milton of Campsie had 4 c/r – best 10lbs, Jim Caldwell kept 2 for 5lbs and returned 1 at 10lbs, Davie Christie 2 c/r – best 10lbs and Jim Steel returned 1 at 10lbs.
