A mayfly on Menteith

Some good fishing at the Lake in the last few days with an improvement in water clarity. It has been a steady week with anglers practicing for the SANACC heat which took place Thursday 24th May. The heat was won by Chris McAllister of Raemoir TF with 18 fish for 35lbs 12.5ozs. James Kerr of Firecats AC was second with 14 fish for 26lbs 8.7 and Ken Oliver of Strathgryfe AA was third with 10 fish for 22lbs 0.5ozs. Forty One anglers took part and the top 21 qualified for the semi finals. Left to right on photo Ken, Chris and James. It was bright throughout the day with a swirly NE wind and although cloud threatened during the afternoon, it was burnt off as quick as it appeared. It was a tougher day than of recent but the 41 competitors still managed 200 fish for 417lbs 7.2 ozs.

There are reports of good catches in the Butts, Sandy Bay and the Plantation -the top method has been the washing line, using buzzers and a booby or fab on the point. There has also been some success using dries in the more sheltered water. Fisherman Andrew Davies spotted a deer swimming in the lake. It was seen at the point near toad’s hole before going into loch end. Below: Peter Lee with a nice trio of trout.

In the MENTEITH FARIO BOAT LEAGUE – Heat 4 of the Menteith Boat League sponsored by Fario flies, saw 18 anglers go out catching 74 fish, Top rod was Brian MacKenzie with 14 fish including 2 brownies, he started up in the hairy hole catching 5 before moving to Chicken leg, he was using dries all night. Brian wins the Fario flies flybox with flies. Second was George whyte with 10 fish, he was fishing down at Lochend all night also using dries. George wins the voucher for a free nights fishing. Third was Alex Galloway with 9 fish. Craig Ingles is now leading the league with George Whyte and Brain MacKenzie are in joint second place.

Things have got more difficult this week which might be linked to the high pressure, sunshine and drop in clarity ?? Recent stockings of over 1000 fish should boost catches (this Monday and Tuesday). The week before it was the washing line, then last week it was the vertical buzzer. This week it is back to the washing line.
Over the weekend; Rookery, Sandy bay, butts and Katies Brae did best with the washing line on a midge tip again the best method - with the minister buzzer (we are sold out) and a tequila fab or cat boobie on the tail. The past couple of nights when the sun has started to go down the fish have been enticed by grunters and yellow owls

Pike on the fly

The Lake is fishing its socks off just now - for tout …and pike. Euan Miller with a 28lb fish on the pike fly yesterday.

Reports of trout rising in the lake “as not seen before”. Sandy Bay Tod hole and Reedy point have all been reported as bubbling. Today the road shore is also fishing well with size 14 buzzers. Cormorants youth fishing starts tonight.

FARIO BOAT LEAGUE by DF. In the first night of the 2019 Menteith boat league, 18 rods caught 99 fish. There were a lot of fish moving - so fishing a floater with dries or buzzers was the way to go. The first three rods were all fishing over in the butts. Top rod was George Whyte with an impressive 20 fish. He was straight lining buzzers and got his first with his first cast, only dropping one all night. George wins a fly box with 22 flies from Fario flies. 2nd was Alex Galloway with 10 fish getting his first fish at 6:50pm and catching 3 on buzzers then changing to dries and catching 7 more Alex wins a Lake voucher giving him a free night fishing in the Boat League. 3rd was newbie Neill Barrett with 10 as well but not catching his first fish till 7:30pm.
