Canals Trust


The Canals Trust has over 2,000 miles of waterway to look after for the many interest groups who use them. With so much water it is no wonder that fishing is high on the list of activities.

The Trust issues a Wanders Permit that entitles you to go fishing on an impressive amount of water throughout England (for just £20).

Appleby Angling Association


Appleby AA have 14 miles of the river Eden and fishing on Howgill Tarn.

The river holds excellent stocks of wild brown trout and grayling there are also improving runs of salmon.

Howgill Tarn is stocked annually with rainbows but is reserved for members.

The brown trout and grayling can reach 2 to 3lbs.

Buttermere


Run by the National Trust offers fishing for pike and perch.

Permits also cover Crummock Water (trout, car, perch, pike), Loweswater (trout only) and a bit of the river Cocker. There are good wild brown trout, char and the odd salmon and sea trout.

You can bring your own boat but motors are not allowed.

Carleton Fishery


Cocklakes near Carlisle just off the A6 consists of 3 ponds:

Chub Pond; at half an acre and 6 to 12 ft deep it has 7 pegs with carp to 12lbs, tench, ide, perch, roach, rudd, crucians and a few chub.

Wires Pond is 1.5 acres with lily pads and irises growing around the fringes, very pretty. 9 pegs with common, ghost and golden carp to 15lbs, big tench, crucians, bream to 8lbs, ide, roach, rudd, perch, gudgen and some chub.

Trees Pond has 16 pegs and is flood lit. Holding common, ghost and golden carp to 16lb tench to 8lbs, roach, rudd, ide, bream and skimmers, perch, crucians, gudgeon and a few chub.

Day tickets are availble by application and membership is available with concessions for juniors, pensioners and students.

Carlisle and Dist Angling Association


Carlisle DAA have 7 miles double bank on the river Eden with 27 named pools. Fishing is for salmon, sea trout (some herrling / finnock), brown trout and coarse fish.

Membership is open to residents living within 5 miles of the city centre however, Visitor Season tickets are available.

Day and week tickets for salmon, brown trout days, week and season and coarse fish week and season. Under 16s get a free permit. The coarse fish are, grayling, chub and dace.

Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club, Crofton Lake


In 1991 the club took the lease on Crofton estate which they have developed and improved over many years of hard work.

The club has installed platforms for disabled anglers.

The lake holds a wide range of species with mirror and common carp to doubles, crucians, roach, rudd, gudgeon, tench, bream and perch.

Day tickets cannot be bought on the bank but can be had from Wilsons Tackle in Carlisle or Carletonhill Fishery Cumwhinton.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery


A 280 acre glacial lake stocked with rainbows and brown trout. Fishing is from bank or boat, fly only in the North Basin and any method - fly, spinning, worm in the South Basin.

There is a good population of pike with a best fish of 39lb 8ozs! Fish to 20s are caught regularly on dead bait and lures. Pike fishing is restricted to the period 1st oct to 31st of March

The lake also holds roach, rudd, bream, silvers, eels and perch. Roach, perch, rudd to 3lbs and bream go to doubles. The permit does not include pike, trout caught must be returned immediately unharmed.

The fishery offers good access for disabled anglers including a boat and toilets.

Haig Angling Club


Haig AC, Whitehaven, have developed a former reservoir into a 2 pond fishery, Mirehouse Ponds, 3 to 18 ft deep consisting of 10 acres on an 11 acre site which has been landscaped.

There are 79 platforms, 10 specially designed for wheelchair access while a hard core path has been installed giving easier access to 36 other platforms.

The larger pond is stocked well with bream, skimmers, roach, perch, tench, rudd, F1s while the smaller lake has common and mirror carp to 20lbs and bigger bream and perch plus silvers.

Day tickets available (night tickets have an additional charge) from Cumbria Tackle, Mirehouse Post Office and the NISA store in Whitehaven. The club also run fishing competions. Membership applications can be down loaded from their web site.

Keswick Angling Association


KAA have fishing on the rivers Derwent and Greta and on Derwentwater. The focus is on brown trout, salmon and sea trout however there are good pike and perch to be had on Derwentwater.

The club offers day and week permits for the river and day, week and season permits for Derwentwater there are also reduced charges for juniors 12 to 21yo.

Lonsdale Park


A holiday centre for fishing holidays in Cumwhinton near Carlisle with 5 lakes available for guests although they do allow some day tickets between November and March. The lake hold a variety of fish some with carp in to 30+.

The reason it is included here is that it does cater very well for disabled anglers with fish mobility buggies to help you to get around the lakes or just explore the 40 acre site.

Talkin Tarn


Located near Brampton in a 120 acre park with a range of activities for all the family. Offers fishing for pike in the 20lb plus class as well as perch up to 4lb.

Fishing in the south end of the lake only. There is a cafe, Talkin Tarn Cabin, where you can buy a permit.

Windermere


At 10 ten miles long Windermere is challenging but in addition to trout and char it has a very healthy population of coarse fish.

There are large numbers of roach and perch, carp have been sighted, rumours of catfish too. The big draw is off course the pike that can grow to the 20s and 30s or maybe even bigger. Salt water baits are allowed for pike but no live bait. They recon to fish close in along drop offs 10 to 20 feets. Best area the North Basin.

You can launch a boat at Fell Foot, Ferry Nab and Waterford, if you are using a motor it must be pre registered. Please make sure the boat is in good condition and a decent size these big lakes can kick off very quickly. Always wear a life preserver.

For bank fishing Ferry to Wray Castle are recommended.

Fishing is free but make sure you have your rod license.
