Appleby Angling Association


Appleby AA have 14 miles of the river Eden and fishing on Howgill Tarn.

The river holds excellent stocks of wild brown trout and grayling there are also improving runs of salmon.

Howgill Tarn is stocked annually with rainbows but is reserved for members.

The brown trout and grayling can reach 2 to 3lbs.

Fishing on the river Ellen for brown trout, salmon and sea trout. (Salmon 31st July to 1st November)

Bessy Beck


Bessy Beck near Kirby Stphens is a great location for a day out for the serious angler and for the family offering fishing on three lakes:

Island Lake, 2, acres stocked with rainbows, blues and brown trout (bt C & R only) Mostly in the range 2 to 5lbs but there is also a good head of fish in the 10 to 15lb range. All fish over 10 to be returned. You can take up to 3 fish on a session then catch and release. Fishing is fly only.

Heron Lake, 1 acre, fly only as for Island.

Mallard Lake is a smaller fly fishing water, 1.5 acres, stocked with smaller fish in the 1.25 to 2lb range. Fishing is catch and kill only.

Facilities for anglers with disabilities, with flat bank at all lakes it is wheelchair accessible.

Broughton Parish Council have the fishing rights on a stretch of the Derwent that passes the village.

Carlisle and Dist Angling Association


Carlisle DAA have 7 miles double bank on the river Eden with 27 namd pools. Fishing is for salmon, sea trout (some herrling / finnock), brown trout and coarse fish.

Membership is open to residents living within 5 miles of the city centre however, Visitor Season tickets are available.

Day and week tickets for salmon, brown trout days, week and season and coarse fish week and season. Under 16s get a free permit. The coarse fish are, grayling, chub and dace.

Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery


A 280 acre glacial lake stocked thoughout the season with rainbows and brown trout. Fishing is from bank or boat, fly only in the North Basin and any method - fly, spinning, worm in the South Basin. Some of the fish look to be very big indeed, in such a big lake there must be many fish that have grown on so you never know what will hit you.

There is a good population of pike with a best fish of 39lb 8ozs! Fish to 20s are caught regularly on dead bait and lures. Pike fishing is restricted to the period 1st oct to 31st of March

The lake also holds roach, rudd, bream, silvers, eels and perch. Roach, perch, rudd to 3lbs and bream go to doubles. The permit does not include pike, trout caught must be returned immediately unharmed.

The fishery offers good access for disabled anglers including a boat and toilets.

Keswick Angling Association


KAA have fishing on the rivers Derwent and Greta and on Derwentwater. The focus is on brown trout, salmon and sea trout however there are good pike and perch to be had on Derwentwater.

The club offers day and week permits for the river and day, week and season permits for Derwentwater there are also reduced charges for juniors 12 to 21yo.

Fishing on 9 miles of the river Eden, 10 beats. 4 miles on the Belah and Scandal Beck. Some good trout and grayling with salmon back end.

New Mills Trout Farm


Near Brampton is a trout fishery with a fly only lake and a bait pond.

New Mills is the 1.5 acre fly fishery stocked with rainbows, brown trout and blues from 2 to 25lbs.

The Fun Fishery is for bait or fly, stocked with rainbows. There is a solid looking path around the lake which would suit people with disabilities but may be difficult for wheelchair users getting close to the bank.

There is a cafe with ramped access and a tackle shop on site, toilets and facilities for disabled.

Penrith Angling Association


Penrith AA control fishing on 42.5 miles of water including 9 miles on the Eden, 7.5 miles on the Eamont, 9.5 miles on the Lowther and several small streams including Petteril, Lyvennet, Leith, Dacre Beck, Briggle Beck, Trout Beck.

The Eden fishing extends from Bolton to Amathwaite flowing over limestone areas resulting in benefits to the trout growth rate due to good feeding. There are some impressive wild trout here with the record standing at 8lbs.

The Eamont is a fast flowing river with trout averaging three quarters but 4 to 5 lb fih are caught evry year and the record fish was 8.5lbs.

The Lowther is a slower flowing water with deep pools, fish up to 1lb but there are biggies lurking in the deep pools.

The streams total 16.5 miles of water generally slow clear waters with very wary wild trout. Great for the dry fly.

There is salmon and sea trout fishing but this is reserved for members as is winter grayling fishing.

Membership is open to folk living within a 20 mile radius of Penrith although a Coutry Season ticket is available for people living outside the qualifying area. The Association also offers concession for juniors, pensioners and for couples.

South Tyne


Alston and District Angling Club. Alston is in Cumbria but much of the fishing is cross border into Northumberland. The club has 10 miles fishing on the South Tyne for salmon, sea trout and brown trout between Eals Village and Alston. Salmon and sea trout start from June onwards. The club do not have all of the beats on this part of the river so check before you fish. The club issues a limited number of day tickets. Windermere and Ambleside Dist Angling Club


In addition to 5 excellent coarse fisheries WADAA have 4 game fisheries located in, what you might expect because of the area, beautiful settings. They are:

Ghyll Head, a well stocked fishery in a stunning setting stocked fortnightly with rainbows averaging 2lb plus some fish into the 4 to 6lb range. Some wild brownies go to 3lbs in this lake.

High Newton, 11 acres, an excellent dry fly water located at elevation with stunning view out to Morecambe Bay. Can be windy but this adds to surface activity as terrestrials get blown onto the water.

Again, stocked fortnightly with 2lb rainbows with some 4 to 6lb fish.

High Fairbanks Tarn, an 11 acre tarn stocked annually with brownies and rainbows. As fish grow on here they have reached up to 9lbs of feral fish. Members only.

Bigland Trout Fishery, in Otter Tarn and 11 acre water with many bays and small islands. Stocked regularly with rainbows as well as some blues and fish in the 3 to 5lb range. Good "hunting" water with dry or nymph.

Float tubing is allowed on Fridays and designated Saturdays.
