Blagdon

Aside from arguments over whether Blagdon or Loch Leven was the first still water fishery there can be no doubt the Blagdon lineage is impressive. Over 100 years old and 440 acres with 7 miles of bank Blagdon is certainly the grand daddy of all still water fisheries in England.

Fishing is from bank or boat. There are 15 boats with outboards and 5 available for rowing. (you can bring your own electric outboard motor). It is well advised that you phone to book a boat as this is a very popular fishery.

There is the iconic tudor style lodge which is staffed in the mornings offering free teas and coffee and tackle for sale. When closed to would have to go to Woodford Lodge on Chew which is nearby.

Cannot find a number to call Blagdon so try Woodford Lodge at Chew on 01275 332339. The boats are individually locked so if you arrive after the staff have gone you need to go to Woodford Lodge to sign in and get a key.

Chew Valley

Opened in 1956 the reservoir is impressive and challenging at 1200 acres. Created over fertile farm land this shallow lake (av depth 14 feet, max at the dam 35 feet) offers great fly fishing as a result of the abundant aquatic life with lots of shrimp, snails, corixa, and fly nymphs especially buzzers.

The lake record stands at 22lbs 7ozs for a brownie and 14lbs 9ozs for a rainbow and I bet they grew on to these weights rather than being fattened in stew pond.

There are day and season tickets availalble, call 01275 332339

Woodford Lodge is availalble for a bit of a break, a beverage or a meal, to get your permit or visit the tackle shop. There are toilet facilities there too.

Lower Lake is 8 acres with good fly life. There is a lodge overlooking the lake with a veranda, tables and chairs and a BBQ. Make a day of it it with family and friends.

The Upper Lake is long, narrow and deeper than Lower. Drift the boat down the shore line casting to the bank loch style is vey effective.
