The Yorkshire Esk was once a great salmon river. Like many rivers it suffered a decline but in recent years it has shown a steady recovery.
This 26 mile long river does produce good numbers of sea trout, the 5 yr average is in the region of 500 fish. Like most migratory fisheries it benfits from a good spate or three.
Much of the fishing is controlled by angling clubs see Danby Angling Club and Esk Fisheries Association who controll 16 of the 26 miles, see Angling Clubs section below.
There is some free fishing but you should check locally for the exact boundaries. Fishing at Leadholm where there is a good sea trout pool. Rakes Common at Glaisdale, Limber Hill, and Sleights also have free water. All benefit from a bit of a spate, night fishing is productive.
