Eden

Eden Angling Association

Excellent trout fishing, the river where I cut my teeth on the dry fly giving me an average of about three fish of 8 to 12ozs per visit, great fun and full of memorable days.

The Eden is about 20 miles long of which the Eden Angling club controls 15 miles. The Upper and Mid sections are almost chalk stream style waters, perfect for dry fly fishing. From below Cupar the river becomes more streamy and while it is still good dry fly water it is also made for wet fly fishing.

Salmon run from July onwards building until October. Sea trout can be taken in the lower river especially around the tidal stretches below Dairsie the Pooch (pouch) is a great spot.. There are a number of dams on the river as I recall though they may have been removed, a factor that affects salmon runs. All are passable with a good spate.

Visitor permits from:

Cupar Hardware Store (R. Dott Thomson), Bonnygate, Cupar;

Keystore Ladywind Cupar

Reekies Country Store, Prestonhall Industrial Estate, Cupar.

The Kilt Shop, 68 South Street, St. Andrews

Aladdins Cave, 259 High Street, Leslie

Endrick

Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association

Has an interesting biology because it has two distinct environments. The northern half of the loch is a typical glacial formed, deep narrow highland loch while the southern end is shallow and more akin to a typical lowland loch. The southern environment suites coarse fish. There are roach, dace, rudd, pike and perch. There are also powan which you should return immediately if you catch them as they are very much an endangered species.

LLAIA have a lease on some of the fishing on the Endrick and Gairloch as well as fishing in the Loch Lomond and the the rivers Leven and the Fruin. They also have fishing in the estuary.

The loch and river offer a variety of fishing opportunities from wild brown trout, salmon and sea trout, coarse fish and massive pike (there was the famed Endrick pike found dead in 1934 at the mouth of the Endrick, estimates range between 50 to 70lbs).

Membership applications to the Secretary, Loch Lomond Angling Improvement Association, PO box 3559, Glasgow, G71 7SJ or call 0141 781 1545.

For permits go to http://www.lochlomondangling.com/permits they have sellers all over Central Scotland.

Esk Midlothian

Esk

Wild brown trout, sea trout and some salmon fishing. Run by Mussleburgh and District Angling Association which by all reports is now in the hands of a proactive committee aiming to improve the quality of the fishing on this attract wee river.

I note they are aiming to install a casting platform for disabled anglers in 2019 and wish them well in this enterprise, good on ya folks.

Rising in the Pentlands above Edinburgh and briefly captured by the North Esk Reservoir the river flows past Peniciuk and on to Roslin ("the" Roslin brought to great fame in the Da Vinci Code). Passing Dalkeith the North Esk is joined by the South Esk just above the bridge over the A 68. Flowing on to Musselburgh past the Musselburgh golf course and Inveresk when me mum was born the Esk enters the Firth of Forth via the Musselburgh lagoons. Some good fishing for sea trout can be had in the lagoons.

Permits are from Ace Bike Co in N. High Street, Musselburgh (behind the Brunton Hall) or from the Edinburgh Angling Centre in Granton.

The club promotes catch and release on it's water.

Esk (North)

This exceptionally productive river is a pleasure to fish, I don't think I have ever not seen fish on this river and have on occasion been surrounded and soaked by them as they slashed about me.

I fished Canterland many times in the 1990's, great spring water in the run where to the power line crosses the river at the car park. A bit dearer now I guess, it was a tenner a day then.
