The Canals Trust have over 2,000 miles of waterway to look after for the many interest groups who use them. With so much water it is no wonder that fishing is high on the list of activities.

The Trust issues a Waterway Wanderers Permit that entitles you to fish on an impressive amount of water throughout England and Wales (for just £20).

Ynysyfro Reservoirs


Newport Reservoir Fly Fishing Association have fishing on 2 reservoirs near Rogerstone, Newport. One reservoir is about 16 acres while the other is about 10 (at this time the lower reservoir is out of action temporarily).

Stocked with rainbows there is a good population of brown trout (C & R only). Fishing is fly only with barbless hooks.

Membership is very inexpensive and gives a good discount on the day ticket price (especially good for juniors and students). You can also take a members season ticket which allows you 100 fish plus catch and release on unlimited visits. Day tickets are also very reasonably priced. There are 2 boats for hire.

Well cared for banks would be suitable for people with mobility issues.

Toilets and a lodge on site. The fishery is also just half a mile away from the 14 Locks Canal Visitor Centre, you pass it on the way to the fishery.. There are full facilities for disabled persons here.

Lliswerry Ponds


Run by New City Anglers for Newport Angling Club Lliswerry offers day ticket fishing for good carp and tench, some big pike, rudd, roach, bream and perch on this 3 acre water.

There is a solid path around the pond with some large pegs that would suit disdabled anglers. Tickets can be bought at the lakeside cabin.

Morgans is about 5 acres with good stocks of carp to doubles plus roach, tench, bream and perch. School Pool is an off shoot from Morgans with 25 pegs, common, mirror and F1 carp. Woodstock is 3 acres with F1s, Mirror carp and skimmers, some pike.

IDA have fishing on 2 reservoirs and the rivers Ebbw, Sirhowy and Rhymney. They offer day tickets fishing and season membership at very reasonable prices considering the quality of the fishing.
