The Canals Trust have over 2,000 miles of waterway to look after for the many interest groups who use them. With so much water it is no wonder that fishing is high on the list of activities.

The Trust issues a Waterway Wanderers Permit that entitles you to fish on an impressive amount of water throughout England and Wales (for just £20).

Severn


Caersws Angling Association has over 7 miles double bank fishing on the upper Severn for brown trout, grayling and salmon. They also have "wild fishing" on the Carno Brook and Afon Trannon.

Fishing is generally fly only however they do allow spinning and worm downstream on Caersws.

Membership is very reasonably priced with discounts for seniors and juniors. Day tickets from:

Gliffaes and Llandetty


Gliffaes Country House Hotel offer trout and salmon fishing on the Gliffaeas consisting of 1 mile left bank split into three beats. Further upstream at Llandetty they have 0.75 of a miles  double bank each bank being one beat.

Llyn / Lake

Beacon Reservoir


Further up the A 470 just past Cantef is the 52 acre Brecon Reservoir the smallest of the 3 Taff reservoirs. Wild brownies plus some good over wintered rainbows supplimented from time to time by stocking with rainbows. Bank fishing only but access is good, the east bank being by the roadside.

Crai Reservoir (Cray)


Located high in the Brecon Beacons National Park this attractive clear water lake holds good stocks of wild brown trout to about 1lb av 8 to 12 ozs. There is a large layby on the A4067 which is next to a rather interesting looking inlet with an inflow stream. Be ready for a hike.

Elan Estate


Elan Estate have extensive fishing for wild brown trout on several lakes and reservoirs issuing three sepate permits for:

Elan Valley Reservoirs, 4 reservoirs, 850 acres: Caban Coch, Garreg Dhu, Pen y Garreg and Craig Goch. All fly only. There is a total of 34k of shore line with a few areas set aside for consevation purpose.

Claerwen Reservoir, 20k of shore line, 900 acres and including feeder streams and hill lochs (except for Llyns Gwagu, Fyrddom, Fyrddom Fawr and Dhu).

Llyn Clywedog


Located in the heart of Wales on the head waters of the Severn Clywedog, at 650 acres, is challenging but very productive. Managed by the Llanidloes and District Angling Association there are 25 Coulam 15 Defenders with 4 hp outbards, handy on such a big water.

LDAA have there own fish farm which helps keep the cost of stocking down and with an average of over 1,000 fish a week going in that is quite a cost. In such a big water not all of those stockies will get caught as is shown by reports of stonking fish into double figures being taken.

There is a lodge on site by the boat moorings, call 01686 412890 to book.

They offer a season ticket for Clywedog at a good price and discounts for OAPs and sizeable discount for junior and youths.

Located in the hills above Carno is this rather attractive fishery with 3 pools is stocked with rainbows from 1.5lbs to 10lbs. You can take 2 fish per visit / week, all fish over 1lb and under 3lbs must be taken C & R thereafter.

Llandrinrod Wells Lake

A 14 acre former Victorian boating lake which has been drained, cleared and restocked with carp, roach rudd, tench, perch and bream. The location is now an attract venue for fishing, for wild life and a picnic. There is a cafe and bistro on site if you don't like the wife's egg and cress sarnies. There is also a stunning metal, water spouting dragon statue in the lake near the old boat house.

Barbless hooks only, no keep nets, no nights.

Llangorse Lake


A 400 acre lake with quality pike fishing plus perch, roach, tench, bream and eels. The lake is an SSSI so there is no bank fishing, boats ony.

Boats are available for hire. You can bring your own boat but make sure it complies with the ability to limit it's speed to 5mph and that it meets enivronmental regulations to avoid bio-contaminating from such things as zebra mussels, otherwise you will be refused a permit to launch.

A 36 acre lake in the centre of this park in Tredegar. The lake has stocks of carp, roach, perch, rudd, tench and pike. Day and season ticket available from the Visitor Centre, Call 01495 355920.

Springrock Fishery and Caravan Site


A 2.5 acre lake up to 15ft deed, reed fringed. Only 6 anglers allowed per day so there is no over crowding. You can bait up and wait or you can just go stalking. Stocked with carp including mirrors, common, ghost and koi to 25lbs.

Montgomeryshire Angling Association


Montgomeryshire AA have stilwwater and river fishing for coarse and game fish around Welshpool.

Moel Y Gart Polls is a members only fishery with facilities for disabled anglers, holding roach, perch, carp, bream and tench.

River Severn, at Lower leighton, 0.75ms from the road bridge to Henfaes brook.

River Vrynwy, 0.5m double bank on Great Dryffrd farm, barbel, chub, perch, pike, grayling, dace and trout.

River Banwy at Llanfair Caereinon, trout grayling, chub, 1.5m double bank from the town bridge down stream.

River Camlad, 0.5 m from Forden upstream form the bridge to the sign post and down stream to Gaer road bridge.

Montgomery Canal, from bridge 119a (Maes y Dre foorbridge) to bridge 115 ay Heulwen Wharf. Pike , tench, carp, rudd, bream.

Membership is very reasonable with discounts for over 65s, 12 to 16yo and under 12. Day and week tickets from the Tourist Information Centre and Grants Newsagent in Welshpool.

Rhayader and Elan Valley Angling Association


There is enough fishing here to keep you fully occupied for weeks. Fishing for trout and grayling on four rivers; Elan, Wye, Claerwen and Marteg, on their spring fed fishery stocked with rainbows and brown trout from the clubs own hatchery and fishing on the Elan Valley reservoirs; Craig Goch, Pen y Garreg, Garreg Dhu and Caban Coch.

Llyngwyn, just 3 miles from Rhayader this 12th century lake was built to feed the nearby abbey with carp. some of that strain still exist in the lake but you cannot fish for them at all however there are stocked rainbows wild brown trout to fish for.

The lake is spring fed and up to 55 feet deep, 3 boats available as well as bank fishing, the fishery is open all year. There are two shelters and toilets on site. Google Map 52.309169, -3.545740 Post Code LD6 5HD

Fishing on the rivers includes:

Wye, 1 mile south and 4 miles north of Rhayader all of it flanked by the A 470 and A44 which makes it easily accessible. Good wild brown trout fishing and grayling. The river is also stocked. Salmon towards the back end of the season.

River Elan, flowing from the reservoirs, a 2 mile stretch along the B4518 east of Rhayader for pike, grayling and brown trout.

River Marteg, 3 miles double bank fro St Harman to the junction with the Wye. Lots of small brown trout and back end salmon.

River Claerwen, 2 miles from Claerwen Dam to Dolymynach, wild brown trout.

The reservoirs include the 4 Elan Valley Reservoirs and Claerwen Reservoir

As for ticket prices there are season and day ticket packages for Llyngwyn Lake, the Elan Valley Reservoirs, Clearwen Reservoirs and and the rivers. Each package offers discounts for OAPs and for Juniors. Each package is very well priced for what is on offer.
