The Forestry Commission offer fishing on a number of lochs and rivers in the area including; Loch Branden, Loch Dee, Black Loch, Loch of Lowes, Lillies Loch, Spectacle Loch, Garwachie, Loch Eldrig, Stroan Loch, Linfern Loch, Palnure Burn and Water of Minnock. Permits can be obtained from any Commission Visitor Centre or call the Recreation Ranger on 01671 402420 Just watch out, while fishing a wee loch in the hills some years ago I drove through an open gate. On my return I found that some chap had locked it. It was at a time before mobile phones, luckily some army lads drove past and gave me a lift to the forestry office several miles away and all worked out nicely in the end.
Barscope Loch
In the grounds of Barscope Castle near Newton Stewart is a 20 acre loch which holds good stock of wild brown trout. Fishing from the bank. For permits call 01644 420461.

Black Loch
Near Newton Stewart very close to the famous Grey Mares tail waterfall. 3 Lochs Estate have the fishing here, 4 boats, fly only fishing for rainbow trout which are stocked at about 2lbs to 8lbs, open all year.
They also have 3 miles of the Airyligg beat of the Tarf, a spate river, for salmon and brown trout.

Carsfad Loch
Dalry AA have fishing on the river Ken (fly only) on the west bank from Earlstoun Power Station to Coum Burn and on the east bank from the suspension bridge to Boatknowe. They also share water with New Galloway AA.
They have fishing on Loch Carsfad (fly, spin, bait) and Earlstoun Reservoir (members and boat only).
The river has good perch, information is scant.

Earlstoun Loch
The fishing on this 180 acre loch is run by Dalry AA who stock with brown trout. Fishing is from boats only. Permits from Newtons Grocers in Dalry.

The club has fishing on 2 lochs, Loch Whinyeon where any legal method (no live / dead bait, is allowed Brown trout and bank fishing only) and a smaller loch Loch Lockenbreck which is fly only, browns, rainbows and brook trout.

Newton Stewart Angling Association Waters
The club has the fishing on a number of lochs in the area, where bait fishing is allowed it is worm only, boats are available on several of the lochs. Wee Glenamour Loch

Bruntis Loch

Clatteringshaw Loch

Loch Dee

Fyntalloch Loch

Loch Kirrieoch

Queensberry Lochs
On the Drumlanrigg Estate near Thornhill consist of 6 lochs;
Morton Castle Loch, 8 acres stocked with rainbows and holding wild brown trout;
Starburn, again stocked with rainbows and holding wild brown trout;
Slateburn, bank and boat for rainbows;
Coldstream bank only for rainbows and wild brownies, plus two new lochs Hillend loch and Farthingford with rainbows (2 to 4lbs) and browns (av. 1lb).

Loch Roan
Fishing on 5 miles of the river Urr for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Best pools are Step End, Cauls, Davie Craig, Red Brae, Spottes Dam, Battery, Jeans and Grange Water, fly only from Spotttes Bridge upstream, worm allowed down stream all season.
They also have fishing for brownies and rainbows in the 56 acre Loch Roan.

Loch Stroan
5 miles from New Galloway is a pretty loch with extensive weed beds and lily pads holding Perch, Pike and Brown trout.
